This thread is devoted to quite possibly my favorite TV show: Mystery Science Theatre 3000.

Quote
Mystery Science Theater 3000 is an American cult television comedy series created by Joel Hodgson and produced by Best Brains, Inc. that ran from 1988 to 1999.

The series features a man and his robot sidekicks who are trapped on a satellite in space by an evil scientist and forced to watch a selection of terrible movies, especially (but not initially limited to) science fiction B-movies. To keep sane, the man and his robots make a running commentary on the film, making fun of its flaws and wisecracking (or "riffing") their way through the film in the style of a movie theater peanut gallery. The movie was presented with a superimposition of the man and robots sillouettes along the bottom of the screen.

Series creator Hodgson originally played the stranded man, Joel Robinson, for five-and-a-half seasons. When Hodgson left in 1993, series head writer Michael J. Nelson replaced him as new B-movie victim Mike Nelson, and continued in the role for the rest of the show's run.

The format proved to be popular. During its eleven years, 198 episodes and one feature film, MST3K attained critical acclaim. The series won a Peabody Award in 1993, and was nominated for writing Emmys in 1994 and 1995.

Wiki

To those unfamiliar with the series, here are some samples to bask in:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/ngBNklagsHQ&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/ngBNklagsHQ&rel=1</a>

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/3M4_XZ3FLHw&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/3M4_XZ3FLHw&rel=1</a>

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/QRB3xDg5pnU&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/QRB3xDg5pnU&rel=1</a>

Of course, these are them lampooning on short-films, generally from the 50's. But they are more renowned for lampooning full-length feature unknown films that are 100% free-domain so they could broadcast these turds for no cost. These films are generally sci-fi, horror, fantasy, biker, and children films.
For those looking to start off somewhere, I'd begin with these episodes:

Hellcats - Season 2 - ep 0213

The Amazing Colossal Man - Season 3 - ep 0314

Santa Claus Conquers The Martians - Season 3 -ep 0321

Manos the Hands of Fate - Season 4 - ep 0424

Warrior of the Lost World - Season 5 - ep 0501

It's probably safe to say that I could recommend every episode blindly, but I haven't seen every episode. I have downloaded the mega-torrent at Demonoid, which contains every episode for their 10 season run....their KTMA season...the various specials they've done, and of course the movie. 142.08 GB torrent file. Took me a couple of months to complete. Well worth it.
So, I'm asking you out there (ahem...Joc) what would you personally recommend, because my time is precious, and it's going to take me a good while to get through this.

I wanted to like the show but I just couldn't. Mostly because I was always left wondering how both Mike and Joel would eat and a breath, and other science facts.

I wish I could have just relaxed.  :/

I agree with what you said earlier. With this show I think you could very easily-blindly recommend any episode, because from the episodes I have seen, it has never failed at being funny. Sure some episodes are funnier than others, but really they're all winners. Then again, like you, I haven't seen every episode.

One of my personal favorites is Squirm (Season 10 Episode 12...I think). Just them constantly ripping on the Mick character had my dying.

I tried jumping on the MST3K project over at THC, but I only managed to get probably only a dozen or so of the discs before the torrents went dead.

so i was unaware that it is the exact same people that do rifftrax. For some reason i was under the impression that only one of the members of rifftrax did MST3K.

I think then between the two it is just a matter of preference, whether you prefer older shitty movies, or new ones. I don't see how one can actually be better then the other.

Anybody listen to Cinematic Titanic?

I personal prefer Rifftrax, because I prefer Mike's humor to Joel's.

Squirm is a great one. I'd love to have seen Lieberman's reaction when he realized the MST3K boys had a hold of one of his babies.

Yeah, Cinematic Titanic is also some good shit. More in tune with the concept behind MST3K than RiffTrax with them silhouetted in the foreground, and with some brief skits in between. Plus, they deal with older films as well as opposed to this new-wave of Hollywood garbage that RiffTrax tackles. Sadly, on CT, they get a blimp out to cover up any nudity for some reason or another--yet all the gore and violence is intact.

well good morning, jocelyn!
let me just toss my opinion into the hat here.......
cinematic titanic is good....& it has all original members from mst3k...Trace Beaulieu (Clayton, & Crow) Mary Jo Pehl (briefly played Claytons mom, then evil Dr.rrester in her own right in later seasons)  Frank Conniff (tv's frank) Joel (duh) & J. Elvis Weinstein (original Servo voice b4 Kevin Murphy came in)
you get some of your hardcore fans who love anything that comes down the pike, or you have the mike vs joel crew.... (i like both, prolly lean towards mike a little more though...but it's the movies that make the difference)
Riff Trax is great, it's just Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy & Bill Corbett ( the later Crow, who i kinda prefer.....he was a nastier, angrier Crow & would rip the hell out of the films...unlike trace's laid back approach...which mimics Joel's attitude almost perfectly) my personal fave character is Tom Servo/Kevin Murphy..i'm just absolutely in love with him.
if i were to recommend some episodes, i'd say that you should really start out with the kinds of movies you find easy to digest (i personally have difficulty sitting through anything Godzilla-esque, so i'll watch those last)
but i do have an extraordinarily high tolerance for bad film, & this show totally satiates my need for garbage.

Squirm is an excellent episode (cant recall who said that first, digi?) as are:
The Final Sacrifice (excellent Canada bashing throughout)
The Legend of Boggy Creek 2 (hysterical!!)
The Horror of Party Beach (old Del Tenney flick, reallly funny)
Track of the Moon Beast (so many great riffs, its sickening)
Pod People (this is a classic excellent ep, i have no idea how OJ can rate Manos b4 PP, Manos is pure torture with few laughs....the only thing that saves it is Torgo imo.........plus Pod ppl is made by J. Piquer Simon who did Pieces & Slugs...can u say awesome?)
Time Chasers, Devil Fish, The Giant Gila Monster, Riding With Death, Warrior of the Lost World, (hey OJ, have you seen Escape 2000? i know you dig those apocalyptic titles) Parts: The Clonus Horror, Final Justice (anything that makes constant fun of Joe Don Baker is a-ok in my book) Zombie Nightmare (Adam West, motorhead, killer zombie? YES!) Hobgoblins, The Incredible Melting Man, Giant Spider Invasion (one of my faves) Werewolf, Pumaman & Future War.

Those are some of my personal faves, hope you check em out!

I'd ask him on FB, but I'm pretty sure his response would be "ASSHOLES!".

Ask Lokey about his reaction to him having that unauthorized version of Just Before Dawn... lol
