...on TCM. I caught The Story of Louis Pasteur on there the other day. It was quite good, as well as educational. I believe Paul Muni won the Oscar for best actor for his portrayal of Pasteur, and I can certainly see why. Muni was pretty much unrecognizable in this role, portraying a cerebral, philanthropic chemist with a long beard--a far cry from his roles in movies such as Scarface and Fugitive From a Chain-Gang.

I'll admit that I don't really watch much of anything after the silent era, up until the early 60's. A pretty big window of cinema to pass-off as dull...but I do. And it is highly ignorant of me, but that's how I feel. So, don't expect much participation from myself in this thread.

Sorry to say... I've only sat through films from the 70's on.

Except for The Sound of Music and West Side Story  :jig:

My grampa and I would watch ol' gangster films of the 30's, but it bored me a bit (acting-wise).  Only true form of cinema back in the day that I loved (and thanks to grampa) was Our Gang/Lil' Rascals, Laurel and Hardy, Bowery Boys.. you know... classic comedy.

My mom got me into the drama/comedies such as Imitation of Life (the original '34, and the '59 remake is just as good to watch).  Admittedly, most films I've watch, I have no clue what the names were/are and couldn't say unless I got hold of mom.  But.. I'm thinking many are from the 40's and 50's (like Ma and Pa Kettle serials and It's A Wonderful Life).

Of course, many of us SHOULD never forget the films that started this genre of horror back in the 30's.  Dracula (31), Frankenstein (31), and The Mummy (32).

Ya... I hate to say that I've never watched any of the horror classics 'cept Night of the Living Dead (which is 60's I think?).

You guys are so awesome to indulge a drunken ass such as myself.

Anyway, I had the idea that this thread could maybe serve as a home for discussion of old non-horror movies. It seemed to me like so much was going into the Recently Watched Movies thread that it served as a detriment to the creation of new threads.

We'll see how it goes, I guess. If it doesn't work, this thread can fade away into obscurity and no harm done.

And so, I watched Blackboard Jungle (1955) today. Very interesting to see Vic Morrow as a high school hooligan--I'd never seen him as anything else but a crusty old bastard. Of course, Sidney Poitier also plays a high-school hooligan in this movie--and he looks exactly the same as he does in every other movie.

I watched Broken Blossoms (1919). It's a film by D.W. Griffith about a girl who gets abused by her father and seeks shelter at the home of an Asian man. Since daddy is a huge racist things don't go too smoothly, and so the plot unfolds. I liked this film, it gets a little slow in some places but overall the story's really good and there's also some sad moments for you to cry your heart out, should you feel like it.
