This decade is drawing to a close, and no one has as yet even decided what to call it. You had the 60s, the 70s, and so forth, but what was this past decade?  The zeroes? The odds?

In any case, what do you think were the best movies of this unnamed decade? I can think of three off-hand:

The Dark Knight--far surpassing any comic book adaptation ever made, this movie was humorous, bleak, and exhilarating all at once.

Memento--from the same director as Dark Knight, this movie took Pulp Fiction's concept of telling a story out of order and brought it to a brilliant and logical extreme.

Requiem For a Dream--a disturbing and brutal story, perfectly portrayed with style and sophistication.

I've been referring to this decade as the "zeroes".

As for the best movie(s) this decade, what immediately comes to mind is:

No Country For Old Men (2007) - I was completely floored by this when I first caught it in the theatre. Everything from the writing, to the non conventional ending, to the direction. It really meshed so well together that it is cinematic brilliance in every conceivable way.

Irreversible (2002) - Gasper Noe is in a league of his own and drives the point home with this incredibly simplistic tale told in reverse order. The camera is completely alive and almost serves as its own character throughout the picture. A perfect collision of image and sound.

Martyrs (2008) - The French are at it again, and exceed all with this later entry in the decade. A multilayered torture porn extravaganza for all to enjoy!

I'm not really getting much else right now to write about...need the memory jogged-up a bit.

I believe I may have too many to mention for 2K.  Either that or I erased so much of my memory, I actually forgotten release dates on 90% of the films I believe were release in the past 9 years but may actually be from the 90s.   :/

But, I like what's mentioned so far.

___
Horror/Cult
Dark Knight (08) | Pretty much, Larry hit the nail on the head explaining it.

Martyrs (08) | This was one of those never-expected type of films.  What starts off as an assuming vengeance-filled flick turns out to be other-worldly and very thought-provoking.  I analyzed this so in-depth (read my input) like Graham with Eraserhead.

À l'intérieur [aka: Inside] (07) | The French had made Sarah the most brutal femme of the new millennium.  What makes her even more different... you almost have to sympathize with her.

Alexandra's Project (03) | Read my review.

Irréversible (02) | Review

[REC] (07) | This is what Diary of the Dead should have been.  Not necessarily zombies, but the use of the camcorder-theme was superbly done.

Eden Lake (08) | A brutal film that hits close to home.  A film that left me feeling highly pissed off and anxious... wonderfully done.

Donnie Darko (01) | A film that made me do a double-take, as if someone was reading my memoirs.  It became a cult hit because emo folks felt intelligent discussing the film.  I loved it because the character was me.

Pan's Labyrinth (06) | I was just awe-struck by this film.  There is a beauty within it that I can't explain, about the lil' girl's journey through death.

Gin gwai [aka: The Eye] (02) | It had been quite a while since I got goosebumps on the back of my neck, and this flick accomplished it with a few scenes.

BEST REMAKES
TIE
The Ring (02) and TCM (03) | Honestly, Hollywood's Ring was much more spookier and the "video" was more intense.  TCM... give the crew credit... they outdone themselves when remaking this classic, when you thought it couldn't be done.

___
Mainstream
The 40 Year Old Virgin (05) | You know how I know you’re gay?  You have a rainbow bumpersticker on your car that says “I love it when balls are in my face".

The Notebook (04) | The first film that was capable of making me ball hysterically.  Gawd, that was cleansing.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (01-03) | Though Heavenly Creatures and Frighteners showed that Peter Jackson was expanding his imaginative storytelling, these three films showed the folks that have known him since his Bad Taste days that he may have sold-out, but in doing so--- he's given hope to the underdogs of filmmaking (unlike Raimi).

Damn. Forgot about [.REC] and Pan's Labyrinth. I liked Inside a lot too but probably wouldn't put it within my top 10 of the decade.

No Country For Old Men! Damn, can't believe I didn't think of that one in the original post, especially since I saw it in the theatre with Graham and Nancy. I remember how disturbed we both were afterwards--well, maybe not "disturbed" exactly, but just sort of like, wow, what just happened there?

Oh yeah, I dig Donnie Darko as well. I wouldn't place it among my favourites of the decade--I feel it borrowed various elements from several episodes of the original Twilight Zone series--but I certainly enjoyed it enough that I've watched it three times. And I could easily watch it again right now--a very entertaining movie, for sure.

Since it appears that I am unable to edit my posts, I will have to create a new one. I wanted to say something further about No Country For Old Men. What makes this movie so great is that it could have easily continued on the track that it began with--the whole hero versus villain thing--it was a great fucking movie all through that, and just barely conventional--there was certainly a dearth of dialogue which made it seem like something different even at that stage.

But for the movie to take such a turn as it did, well, that was just completely unexpected and innovative. I can understand why it pissed off a lot of people. But I love it precisely for the reason that it pisses people off. It was a twist not only in terms of story, but in the depiction of the story. I can't think of any precedent for that sort of thing.

There Will Be Blood should be on that list. And while you're at it take that Dark Knight bullshit off there so I can wipe my ass with it.

I'll put a nod to Memento, Donnie Darko, Requiem for a Dream, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Pan's Labyrinth, Martyrs and No Country for Old Men.

Might I add: City of God and Oldboy.

Good call on City of God and Oldboy. Hell, I'd throw Chan-wook Park's entire 'Vengeance Trilogy' into the best of the decade. City of Men however...not so much. Great movie, but alongside the other masterpieces in here, nah, don't think so.

Children of Men. I think that deserves a mention.

After checking a few online lists... I have to throw Mulholland Drive in there as well.

I know this is going to give Lokey license to come in here and be the best blowhard he can be, but fuck the fat fuck.
Tarantino had a pretty decent decade in my opinion. Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2 are exceptionally good. And Inglourious Basterds deserves to be on this list. Death Proof does not. I like DP, but he has done much better work.

FUCK!  DUH

Fraility
I can't believe that one skipped my mind.  That was a terrific movie.  Also need to add:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (04) | I'm a sucker for tripped-out love stories involving the mentally ill.

hmmmm...it seemed like the zeroes were the decade for the bad-ass tv show.....Band of Brothers, Sopranos (even tho it started in 1999, it ran thru most of the decade) Oz, The Office, etc..i think i watched far more television than i did new "worthy" films.
although for comedy i might choose Not Another Teen Movie or Scary Movie 1 or 2 over 40 yr old Virgin.
& with my interest in WWII always peaked, i feel obliged to mention The Pianist, despite my distaste for the man behind it.
