I really dislike pot culture films.. so juvenile..

I suppose i have a bit of a soft spot for cheech and chong.. Other then that i can't think of one movie envolving pot which was enjoyable.. this will probably be another movie for my stoner friends to want to watch while they are high.. there is nothing worse then watching movies based of weed when you are not high and everyone else is.. makes you want to die..

Gigantor Please tell me you don't have a poster of the trailer park boys at your place ::)

Certainly not. I've always loved TPB.

may i ask with respect.. why? and do you like the later seasons as much as the early ones?

i know I'm tainted, growing up in a small town and my experience with trailer park boys, came largely second hand as it was embraced by the younger kids then me. But even with my first couple viewings I've never been able to make it through an episode. I suppose there is more then one way to appreciate it but my encounters with it other then the younger stoner kids quoting it, was through people who would have the posters not just showing them but more importantly the pot that was surrounding them.

i find drug culture fascinating, But Weed culture i don't at all, mostly the pseudo artistic skills people seem to think they produce under the drug.

Why do I like TPB? Hmm, that's something I was never posed with before, so I don't exactly have a predisposed answer off hand. Besides, you've never even seen the show before so my reasoning would be moot towards you, no doubt.

But I'll try and articulate myself here all the same.

TBP was something very light and very simple that I could watch at any given point in the episode and find myself enjoying it on many levels:

-Many subtle Canadian references throughout the episodes:
In this manic entertainment starved craze we've pretty much introduced ourselves with since birth, we are very seldom given the opportunity to see real Canadian references in media outside of how the US portrays us (Igloos, hockey, cold, etc...). Nothing beats seeing Ricky drink rum and coke with a cut-up PC bottle. Or the many Rush references (such as when Bubbles kidnapped Alex Lifeson). The MacDonald cigarettes. Etc...They're light, and not overly subjective like most American shows are, so I've always had an appreciation of that.

-Face it, we all feel infinitely better when watching losers consistently lose at life:
The high-point (or low) of the show is really digging on just how utterly stupid the gang is. Everything from their parenting skills, excessive drugging/boozing, schemes, gunplay, all go to such lengths of stupidity it is a formula that never got old to me. In the later seasons, I found it began to sputter a little, and some charm was lost with a couple of key members leaving the show, but it was a consistent formula until the bitter end of the series.

-Watching life in the trailer park:
I've had friends/acquaintances tell me that the show is not very far off from the reality of living in a trailer park. Sure, there are some gross exaggerations sprinkled throughout the series (hash driveway, cars flipped over in the middle of the road, garbage anywhere, zero sense of humanity within the community).

-Interesting characters:
Even though they've got the extra chromosome, the three primary characters of the show (Ricky, Julian, Bubbles) gel together so well throughout each episode it is a real treat to watch them work off of each other and how they react to all secondary characters (Lucy, Shitty Bill, Cory & Trevor, plus a multitude of others).

I'm sure you've made up your mind about not watching the show, so I won't bother wasting anymore time trying to figure out why I have ever liked the show in the first place.

It appears a lot of your judgment (seeing as you claim you haven't even watched an episode in full) relies upon how the younger fans of the series represent themselves. I am faced with this a lot with some artists I like (Tool, Marilyn Manson, Rage Against the Machine. most forms of metal, etc...) whereas people dislike whatever due to the fans and how they represent themselves intellectually and physically.  Nothing to do with the actual art-form.

Before I started watching it, I was under the impression that it was horrible based on the shitty camcorder-esque production values. I was bored at work one night and happened to catch an episode and after that I was instantly hooked. The show is brilliantly written and as OJ said a lot of the Kanadian references really hit home. A lot of us remember or know people like that so it's a lot more relevant I guess. It's like the movie FUBAR. Many people (especially Americans) don't get it but I've run into people like the characters in the film (not to mention it was shot here and the segment that takes place in Bragg Creek is priceless given the fact that the inbred retards thought they were taking part in a real documentary) on many occasions and that's what makes it truly funny. Wow that was a shitty runon sentence and I don't care. Maybe I'll get my Grade 10 jacket after all.

i actually just got turned onto them within the last few months and i love the show....i've seen the original movie, seasons 1-7, the x-mas special & the latest preview for the special in December. i've yet to see The Big Dirty....and i think there's something called One Last Shot?
i read somewhere (wiki or web site, idk) that they're supposedly doing a special in Dec 2008 and another one scheduled for sometime in 2009.
i'd really like to see another season, myself...but i'll take what i can get.

I was big into Trailer Park Boys for quite some time. For one thing, it's set in Nova Scotia, and I grew up there, and--unfortunately--I know people who are pretty much "exactly" like these characters. It's weird--this is supposed to be comedic/over-the-top, and it really isn't (with the exception of some things which ought to be obvious). You really have to be from Nova Scotia to pick up on a lot of stuff in there, and I dig the fuck out of that fact, that they can be so unapologetically esoteric/obscure.

Also, it's just plain clever and well-written. The acting isn't "great" by any means--I don't see the actors going on to do anything else (excepting, of course, Ellen Page, who was barely there before moving on to Hollywood glory), but they seem very natural in their roles, as though they were born to play these particular roles and nothing else.

Having said all that, the formula became a bit stale for me, and I quit watching a while back. I may have overdosed on it, I dunno. Is it still going?

The TV show is done and all that Showcase plays now is re-runs. They are planning annual hour long specials though. One should be out before Xmas.

well it is pretty clear i am in the minority here. my biggest issue from day one has been the reference to drug culture, even before the annoyance of the youth following the show, i had gave it a chance through episodes that like i said never sat through. it was about a year later when it became very popular that i felt my reasoning towards it was justified, because the only thing funnier then catchphrases and comical characters, is the portrayal of those moments and characters being done over and over again by kids. same went with Chapelle show "i'm rick james bitch." I don't think i have to explain the misuse of that..

I was curious to know why people liked it, those who have similar tastes in media consumption, because i saw it as not having any merit..

I still don't like it but i won't be bitching about it in the near future her now, because I got responses that make sense, as to why you all felt the show was enjoyable..

I fell into a similar trap as you regarding the whole "I'm Rick James Bitch!" phase that encompassed everyone under the age of 20. Chappelle was an overnight sensation and I hated the man a great deal because of the emulation from his Rick James skit. That is, until I actually sat down and watched The Chappelle Show (under protest, mind you) and immediately fell in love with the show.

This is why I pay no heed to fans of any form of media/art, because a lot can be missed out upon as a result.

Personally I haven't ever been amused by the whole drug culture thing either, having never really been into them myself. I enjoy TPB in spite of this.

Some sad TBP news. Yes Adam, I am hijacking your thread and twisting it into a news thread:

End of the Trailer Park Boys

Quote
A message from Mike Clattenburg, creator of the Trailer Park Boys:

“Over the past few months there has been a lot of discussion among our fans and those in the media about the future of Trailer Park Boys. Will there be another season, another special, another movie? The last thing we want to do is keep our loyal fans in the dark about the show we have all loved doing for the past eight years, so we’d like now to shed some light.

We have a final one hour television special, “Say Goodnight To The Bad Guys”, which goes to air on Showcase on Sunday, December 7, 2008. Then after that, our sequel movie, “Countdown To Liqour Day” (working title), is due to be released in Canadian theatres in October, 2009.

But, after that, there will be no more. Yes, it’s the end of Trailer Park Boys. Our fans have been so supportive and inspiring that we wanted you to be the first to know. Much love and thanks from all of at Sunnyvale Trailer Park.
