3 Red Lights of Death

Well it was bound to happen I guess. Went to turn on the 360 for a bit of Bioshock only to be greeted by the dreaded
3 red lights of death
. I've since tried all the online fixes save for ripping the thing apart or wrapping it in a towel (don't ask). Not sure what I'm going to do at this point. 'tis a sad day in our house. :'(

I've read at various forums that the towel trick does indeed work. Since MS extended their warrently specifically for the 3 RLoD, why not give the towel trick a run before shipping it out? Because, if you ship it out, it takes quite some time to receive it back (unless of course you have a plan where the joint your purchased it at simply gives you a new machine).
In any case, my condolences, it is something I fear everytime I boot my machine up.

I'm a gutsy bastard when it comes to comps. I would have that thing torn apart in a sec just so I can get to the problem. Take out the HDD, see if the lights still occur, check the PSU light to see if it's green/yellow/not on, put better thermal grease on the CPU and make sure the chip was on securely, and if all else fails.... have a Tourette Fit because I just voided the warranty.
This is why I build my own boxes.

I don't trust those cunts to ship it out, really. 5-8 days to get a box, 5-8 days to get it to them and then like 2-4 weeks for them to maybe fix it? Meanwhile I'll be looking at a nice shiny Halo 3 coaster sitting in the spot where my 360 once was.

The ol' Halo curse. I recall about a month before Halo 2 was to be released my original Xbox completely crapped out on me. Thankfully it fixed itself days before Halo 2 was released and lasted me until the 360 came out.

Well I said fuck it and picked up another Pro System. I'll send off the old Xbox and if they fix it and ever get it back to me I'll either sell it or trade it in.

Well, you're far more impatient than I--and I am a very impatient man. At least you "jumped in" sooner than later.

You have no idea the depths of my impatience.

Speaking of impatience, we just got our shipping materials yesterday, almost a month after initiating the repair order. This does not bode well, and I don't feel bad about picking up a new 360 in the interim at all. At this rate by the time we get the old one back the Xbox 720 will be out.

Once I actually got someone to put the repair order in properly I got the shipping materials within a week. After shipping it off it took less than 3 weeks if I recall correctly. I'm sure I would have a better grasp of how long it took if I hadn't said "fuck it" and ran out and bough a new one in the interim.

I'm clearly playing against all odds here with a launch system still purring away. I'm surprised you got the 3 red lights of death there, Larry, given the fact that your model is presumably of a newer make.

That sucks Larry. Four months after purchasing my 360 I received the RROD. However, mine was caused by my intercooler and possibly my baby pulling at cords behind the unit. Anyway, the intercooler ended up melting into the 360. Luckily my wife is a good talker and returned it to walmart for a full refund... then I got her to get an 360 Elite instead. However, I had to make a deal that if she was able to return it and get me an Elite, I had to stay off of it for 1 week and limit my gaming to 2 hours a day after that. And those were the good old days... now I'm lucky if I get an hour of gaming a day.
I haven't had any problems with my Elite and I'm no longer using an intercooler.

Actually, I didn't get the red ring of death. It was something else. Thing is, I know how to fix it, but I don't want to void the warranty, in case I do eventually get the ring of death.
Ah, so was it just constant freezing then? I'm guessing to remedy it you'd have to crack it open then?

Incidentally:
Quote
Inside Source Reveal the Truth About Xbox 360 "Red Ring of Death" Failures
The Xbox 360 "Red Ring of Death"
Since it's launch in Fall of 2005 Xbox 360 systems all over the world have had major hardware failure problems resulting in millions of costumers having to mail their Xbox back to Microsoft. No one really knows what has been causing these problems since the official lines never divulged the specific problems or rates of failure. All a person has to do is to press the power button on their Xbox 360 and there is a chance that it will just up and fail to boot up and shine the "Red Rings of Death". Microsoft decided to extend the warrantee for the Xbox 360 but the cloud of fear and uncertainly still hang around the game system.
Lengthy Q & A here.
