I disagree.. The film did not need to be as violent as the book to get the message of 80's corruption across. If she went with a more literal translation of the book, there would of not been the budget or the cast for the film because no one would give the money and none of those actors would of signed up for something with that amount of graphic violence.

I don't think you can make a faithful adaptation of the book which is where the director was coming from, which I agree. I think a lot of the underlining themes that were in the book still translate to the film, such as, the obsession with materialistic goods (which I found funny in the film.. not so much in the book)

Bottom line: if the book is too hard to make into a film, DON'T. The problem here is now we have to listen to whiny assclowns like Adam (not insulting, just stating the obvious) extole the virtues of a substandard film based on a brilliant book, and pretend that they "know what they're talking about" over other far more superior minds.
