For anybody who hasn't read the book (shame on you), this is about a father and his young son travelling to the coast after an undefined disaster destroys the world. Bands of cannibals roam the lands and it's every man for himself in a desperate fight for survival.

Huh. That kind of sounds like The New Barbarians or something. This is far more bleak and brooding of a story though. The film does a pretty good job emulating the bleak emptiness of the book. They've obviously added a few elements to make it more filmable like the flashbacks to how the Father's life was before the shit hit the fan, and the ending is a bit more positive (this of course depends on how one interprets the ending of the book). The flashbacks at times do take away from the pacing but also serve as a retina-searing contrast to the grim ash-covered surroundings in which the story takes place. Worthy of a viewing for sure, especially if you like post-apoctalyptic cinema.

I might try and pick it up on blu-ray in the near future.

have you had a chance to viddy the blu-ray or any of the special features on the disc yet?

It was the Blu-ray we viddied. Looks kick ass. Only viewed the deleted/extended scenes, but there's a making of as well as commentary... all the usual fare.

The Road was fantastic. Very un-Hollywood with a very Hollywood budget.

i'm just gonna have to break down & get this i guess. i never read the book (i know, i know) but i'm excited by the praise (such as it is) that's it's been getting by fellow church members. the congregation is a more accurate barometer of what i'd like than say.... anyone else.

can i use barometer in that way? fuck, im retarded.

What impressed me was that they found the most unannoying child actor. I fully expected to hope evil shit upon whichever child they cast because, let's face it, child actors are awful.

IMO, the only thing that made No Country for Old Men a better McCarthy adaptation was that in NCfOM they were able to have the Tommy Lee Jones VOs which really let the viewer experience the amazing writing of McCarthy.

I also liked the fact that broad at the end of the Road was Alma from Deadwood. She's hot, Deadwood was awesome.

Indeed. Nothing more irritating than a child actor. And you're right, the kid in The Road did a fine job.

agreed on all counts except that Alma was hot. she's just not my cup of tea. Ian McShane...now i'd fuck him with your dick. ;)
