Looking for some good suggestions for true crime novels, I have had a passing interest in the past but want to read more.. I always found the genre to be one that is harder to get into, knowing about the killers but little about the books and the writers..

there are some authors who have written alot on the subject, but I'm not sure if that makes them good, or if i am getting a formalized water down take on the subject at hand. (quantity over quality)

I know there are a few fans here so any help would be appreciated.

As far as True Crime goes, I stick with the basics: Dahmer, Bundy, Manson, Gacy, Ramirez, etc...more or less, American celebrity serial killers.
I have a shit-load of books on the subject, so if you want to arrange something let me know.

agreed. .....this is the same guy who wrote Deviant for Gein, right?
also some great books that go fairly in depth, but do a wide array of killers.....a few that spring to mind:
The Mammoth Book of True Crime by Colin Wilson
The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers by Michael Newton

(both are great books, and have been used heartily...dog eared pages & highlighting abounds!)

if you're looking for anything more specific let me know...i have a small fortune in crime/serial killer research material.

If there's something I know better than movies... it's true crime.  These are a few of my top reads since I was a kid.  Don't confuse some with fiction (House of Evil to Ketchum's Girl Next Door, etc).  I also recommend the docudramas based on most of these.  Made-for-TV The Right To Kill (which later became the book Poison Tree) is HIGHLY recommended, since I believe this is more of a lost treasure compared to the others which either still play on TV, are already popular/cult, or are dramatized over and over again in revisionings.

*edit*
This list DOES NOT include any "encyclopedia" of crimes.  These are crime specific.
*end edit*

Say You Love Satan (David St. Clair)
Fatal Vision (Joe McGinniss)
The Onion Field (Joseph Wambaugh)
In Cold Blood (Truman Capote)
The Night Stalker (Philip Carlo)
Deviant (Harold Schechter)
House of Evil (John Dean)
The Man Who Killed Boys (Clifford L. Linedecker)
Cries in the Desert (John Glatt)
The Stranger Beside Me (Ann Rule)
Lethal Intent (Sue Russell)
Bitter Harvest (Ann Rule)
The Burning Bed (Faith McNulty)
Deadly Innocence (Scott Burnside and Alan Cairns)
The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (Donald A. Davis)
Poison Tree (Alan Prendergast)
And of course, Helter Skelter (Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry)

Unfortunately, most of the shit I read, my mom once had.  I wish she still had the Say/Satan because I want that first paperback printing.

I think the only one I have on hand is... Deviant?

Daaisy Seven is an auction site dedicated to serial murder.... ibilia, only. Right now they are putting EVERYTHING up for 99 cents! Buy a dollars worth of Gary Heidnik's cum-stained boxers. O'Toole's doodles! truecrime cards from '92! i'm broke but would totally take advantage.

Fuck the basics... no, they are fun - but the low profiles and obscure killers are and have been very, very distinct.

Poppy Z Brite's Exquisite Corpse is in reference to Dahmer and Nielsen(his London counterpart). I DARE you to read that

I read some Poppy and could not get into her.. I will stick with my Ketchum's and Lee's on the fiction front.. I don't imagine there is anything out there that is drastically more disturbing then what those two conjure up.

If you're iffy about STDs, homosexuality, and pedophilia... is what I meant. I'm sure most here would be turned off.
