I'll check it out. The DeLillo and McCarthy stuff you've turned me onto I enjoyed a great deal.

Just finished The Sound & The Fury by William Faulkner.

My two favourite authors of all-time are Cormac McCarthy and Don DeLillo. I love them for their amazing writing and the fact that their stories are filled with a lot of subtlety; you're not always 100% sure what's going on but with enough reading and thought you start to come to conclusions on your own. They also resist the urge to put their protagonists on pedestals, often disregarding them with little fanfare.

All of what I find makes them great is present in The Sound & The Fury. In fact, what makes Faulkner's classic even more amazing is the fact that it was written in 1928, more than 40 years before McCarthy and DeLillo started employing much of the elusive and beautiful writing that make this classic what it is.

I am often skeptical of classics, as they don't often age well, but this is one that does, which makes it even more incredible. It seems as relevant today as it could have been in 1928.

Warning, the first chapter is written from the perspective of a 33 year old man with an intellect of a 5 year old, so it can be a bit challenge off the start, but if you can stick with it, it's an incredible read.

Strongly recommended.

Agreed. I reckon Mayfield is afraid we will trounce him if he speaks about movies...much like he would with us if we spoke about books :fear:

Snagged a copy of Lying With Strangers from my building's laundry room, which also happens to be the spot where people drop off stuff they don't want anymore and think it could be used by somebody else. Seems like it may actually have the potential to hold my attention, which most books I've attempted have failed miserably at.

I'm in need of a turntable. I'm tired of my vinyl not being heard. I got a copy of Herb Alpert's Rise the other day down there, but I've nothing to play it on. Fuck, I miss listening to my Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass albums.

Naked Empire by Terry Goodkind. I'm just 4 books away to being caught up on the series before the next book in the series comes out in October. :P

There's no shortage of record players around here, just a shortage of funds to obtain one.

I can bring it down a notch, so you may feel free to talk openly about books again..

I just finished Richard Laymons the woods are dark. I liked this book because it was short, short is nice, if a book is to long I get really frustrated after I get to a certain point and realise there is still a lot of book left. The story had good villains, they were a big tribe of inbred hicks, who would rape and cannibalize people from the local town. There were scenes of locals getting raped by stubby appendages, which to me was gross and gross = Awesome..

I am now reading Richard Laymons Flesh, it is not as good because it is longer, and less violent, but I am still enjoying it, because it almost seems like he stole the entire concept from Brain Damage, which was a good film..

I never really believed you could read in the first place. I assumed that you had some sort of text to voice simulation on your Speak-n-Spell machine that read the board to you and vice versa.

Picked up The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.  I'm about 2/3 through and it's good so far.  I want to finish it this week and watch the movie.

 lol

I don't watch nearly enough movies to contribute to the movie thread, especially in the horror category. I have a really big interest in horror movies, but I usually can't convince my wife to watch them. Plus, she doesn't speak English well, despite what the ad on that mail order bride site said, so that complicates things as well.

Although I did greatly enjoy Black Gestapo.

And I would never trounce anyone about books...just like to talk about them.
