Oh yeah and I was off for a week and read
A Game of Thrones
by George R. R. Martin. It's probably been more than 10 years since I read a fantasy novel. I had written the genre off, somewhat unfairly, for being pretty adolescent and predictable. This book was a gift from a friend who really wanted me to give it a go. I am really glad I did.
A Game of Thrones
is a fairly sophisticated page turner. The perfect summer book IMO. Easy to get through, but still compelling, well written and original. The characters are well defined and human and the plot line moves with quite a few twists that I didn't see coming.
When you read the
synopsis
it will sound like the typical fantasy novel, but it stands out to me. Also, when I read the synopsis now, apparently it's been out for 14 years and is well beloved by the fantasy community.
I have been living under a rock.
I also just discovered that it's being made into a
mini series by HBO
. And...

I don't watch nearly enough movies to contribute to the movie thread, especially in the horror category. I have a really big interest in horror movies, but I usually can't convince my wife to watch them. Plus, she doesn't speak English well, despite what the ad on that mail order bride site said, so that complicates things as well.
Although I did greatly enjoy Black Gestapo.
You know I got your hook up.

Deathtripping
The hit and miss of CoT. I decided to remove the pics of Lydia Lunch and post them on my chamber walls after reading Deathtripping. She used to be the cutest fucking thing.

Reading Sleazeoid Express. About life in times square in during the grindhouse era. Its ok.
This was my bible of sorts back in the day. Before CG and thoroughly inspecting the interwebs, this gave me the scoop on films I needed to watch.
Half Price Books always has Sleazoid and Deathtripping well-stocked, in abundance.
I was given an old copy of Saint Morrissey today by a new old friend. I'll probably read it within the down times at the work zone. Supposedly, this ring he gave me also belonged to Morrissey but was taken from him when he was bombarded on stage, in Houston. I do not believe this story fully, but the ring is cool and I've the space for it.

Reading
Blood Meridian
by Cormac McCarthy. Whereas his other Westerns I've read (The Border Trilogy) have long absences from the jarring violence that make McCarthy great followed by poignant little blasts that move the story along,
Blood Meridian
features a steady diet of incredible writing and violence throughout. I never thought I would like Westerns, but these are fantastic.
And I only note the violence in his books because he's one of the few writers to do violence written that well.
So you can run and tell that. Run and tell that.

I don't know why I don't update my recent reads in here...it's been quite a few months since I've last posted here, and many books have been read.
err, yeah, anyway, decided to give Michael Gira's The Consumer another go. It liquefies my insides. A sickly little read.

i have a few old ripped up, highlighted movie guides....but im on the lookout for a new one.
does anyone have any suggestions? i've got Creature Feature, Psychotronic, Horror Hounds, etc...i'm open to something that covers sort of "our" realm of films...cult, exploi, horror, b, giallo, spaghetti, etc etc etc.
if not, straight up horror & ill get seperate books for dif genres.
anyway....what guides do you guys have? i gotta be missing all kinds of awesome shit.

GET SELF HELP... from Alejandro Jodorowsky.
I'm not reading this, but I'd like to. The whole idea reminds me of "curanderismo." Actually, aside from "limpia(an act of cleansing AKA horseshit)" practitioners, masseuses, and herbal remedy - this kinda marks Alejandro as a curandero(curer) in a traditional sense of spiritual enlightenment. He'd probably hang my head if he knew I associated him with such a word, in the sense, though.

I've read the first few volumes and they weren't horrible. Though I still don't fully understand the whole 'Dawn' sub-plot.
