It seems the “discount” on horror houses only lasts so long. The infamous Amityville Horror house has just hit the market for $1.15 million.

The five-bedroom home on New York’s Long Island sold for just $55,000 in the early years after Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot six family members in their sleep there in 1974.  By 1997 it went for $310,000.

The home is priced fairly for today’s market, says listing agent Laura Zambratto of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty, in an email.

The murders spawned a book and a series of films, starting with “The Amityville Horror,” (1979) starring James Brolin and Margo Kidder. That Oscar-nominated movie is based on the story of the Lutz family, who stayed in the house the year after the murders occurred. The Lutzes lost the house to foreclosure, Newsday reports.

According to Newsday, previous owners James and Barbara Cromarty, who owned the house from 1977-1987, changed the address of the home –from 112 Ocean Ave. to 108 Ocean Ave.–to protect their privacy. “Nothing weird ever happened, except for people coming by because of the book and the movie,” Mr. Cromarty tells Newsday. They sold the house to Peter and Jeanne O’Neill who lived there until 1997 and sold to its current owner, identified by Newsday as Brian Wilson.
